modules:
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project Microsoft Office documents
- Open Office documents
- PDF files

3. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Before Installation
-
Users must be logged on with administrator privileges.
-
If a previous version of File Classifier has been
installed, we recommend that it is uninstalled prior to installation. If you
do perform an upgrade operation, you may have to manually restart the
explorer process at the end of the installation.
-
If a version of File Classifier prior to 3.11.1 was deployed by Group Policy, you should
not manually uninstall that version from the Control Panel/Program and
Features item; doing so will result in that computer being unable to successfully install
this or subsequent versions of File Classifier unless additional steps are
taken to remove some vestiges of that previous installation from the
registry.
-
Following installation we recommend that the user reboots their computer.
Installation
-
Run "setup.exe" from the installation media and follow the on screen instructions.
Note: there are separate installations for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows; make sure you choose the appropriate installation for the target Operating System.
Note: for more information on installation through Group Policy see the Classifier Administration Guide.
Silent Installation
The software can be installed without displaying a user interface. This is possible
using command line options; the command shell should be opened with 'Run
as administrator' permissions. For example, to perform a 32-bit silent install displaying no user interface:
msiexec /i FileClassifier32.msi /qn
File Classifier has an extra installation option which allows it to be
installed in a way that requires less system resource for the icon overlay
feature (icon overlays are a feature introduced in release 3.7 which provide a
quick indication that a file has been labelled by Classifier when it's viewed in
Windows Explorer). See the File Classifier Guide document for more information on
this installation option and the icon overlay feature. The following command
line is an example of this option being set in a 64-bit installation when only 3
custom icon overlays are
required:
msiexec /i FileClassifier64.msi OVERLAYCOUNT=3
The value for OVERLAYCOUNT can be from 0 to 9 inclusive, or the special
value NONE, in which case, not even the default File Classifier icon overlay
will be created.
Uninstallation
To un-install follow these simple steps:
- Navigate to 'Programs and Features' in 'Control Panel'.
- The entry 'Boldon James File Classifier' appears in the list of installed programs. Select it and click 'un-install'.
- Confirm this operation when prompted and the product will be removed.

4. FURTHER INFORMATION
- File Classifier requires a 'File Classifier' licence which is administered using the Classifier Administration Tool.
-
Visio files are not supported by default but can be configured to read/write from the ADS.
See Classifier Administration Guide for more information.
-
File icon overlay feature may not work properly if other
icon overlay handlers are registered due to the limited number of icon
overlay handler registration 'slots' available in Windows.
